The Carrera Glassbox makes its crystal part of the spectacle. The Premier B01 gives the dial a smoother, quieter frame. Both put an automatic chronograph on leather, but they offer different reasons to stop and look at the watch.
This blue 39 mm Carrera is substantially narrower than the 42 mm Premier, yet it is fractionally thicker. The Breitling reduces the number of counters, while the TAG Heuer provides timing over longer durations. Those differences matter more than calling either one the dressier sports watch.

Carrera’s curved crystal and Premier’s refined chronograph roots
The Carrera began in 1963, with readability central to Jack Heuer’s racing-watch brief. Modern Glassbox development returned to domed sapphire in 2015, then reshaped the concept in 2023 through the curved flange beneath the crystal. This reference belongs to that later expression.
Breitling introduced the Premier in 1943, placing greater emphasis on style within its established chronograph work. The modern model retains details such as the smooth bezel, twin-register face, applied Arabic numerals and rectangular pushers. The historical contrast is useful: Carrera develops the physical presentation of a racing chronograph, while Premier continues a long-standing idea that a timing watch can be chosen for refinement as well as professional associations.
The crystal changes the Carrera’s whole outline
The Glassbox’s curved blue flange carries timing scales beneath the dome. Instead of relying on a large external bezel, the display rises towards the edge of the crystal. The side view becomes an important part of its character.
The Premier places a smooth fixed bezel around a more conventionally framed dial. Its cambered sapphire and rectangular pushers keep visual interest without making the crystal the main subject.
Compare both from oblique angles, not just directly above. If you enjoy the way glass and dial form a continuous curved surface, the Carrera has a specific attraction. If you prefer the face to remain the focal point, the Breitling is the more restrained starting point.
Narrower does not mean lower
The TAG Heuer measures 39 mm across and 13.9 mm thick. The Breitling is 42 mm across and 13.6 mm thick. The smaller watch therefore concentrates its height within a narrower diameter.
That may suit someone who wants less width but still enjoys a substantial chronograph profile. The Premier spreads its face more broadly and is only marginally lower, so it should not be mistaken for a thin dress watch.
Try each with the strap adjusted to the position you normally wear. The relationship between case height, lugs and strap matters more than deciding that a particular diameter is always ideal.
How much elapsed time do you need?
The Carrera TH20-00 provides 30-minute and 12-hour chronograph counters. That makes it the more complete choice here if you want to record durations beyond a short event without relying on memory.
The Premier’s two-register display includes a 30-minute counter and running seconds. It gives up a dedicated hour counter in exchange for the balanced twin-register arrangement. That is a deliberate functional and aesthetic trade.
If you mainly time a brief activity or enjoy the appearance of a chronograph, the Breitling’s reduced layout may be preferable. If longer timing is part of the purpose, the Carrera’s additional counter earns its space.
The reserve is useful, but unlikely to settle it
The Carrera offers 80 hours and the Premier approximately 70. Both provide several days of potential running time from full wind, with automatic winding supporting ordinary use.
The extra ten hours may offer a little more margin in a rotation. It is a smaller practical distinction than whether you want an hour counter, or prefer one of the two case shapes.
Both references have sapphire display backs and 100 m water resistance. Their appeal can therefore include looking at the mechanical architecture without changing the basic sporting-water specification of this comparison.
Let the whole colour and strap combination count
The Carrera’s blue dial and calfskin strap reinforce its cool, continuous appearance. The Premier’s brown alligator strap gives the selected reference a different texture and tone. These are complete configurations, not interchangeable accessories in a specification list.
Choose the Carrera when its curved display, narrower case and longer-duration chronograph are the features you want to enjoy repeatedly. Choose the Premier when the twin-register balance, Arabic numerals and smoother framing are more persuasive.
Both have credible histories behind their modern forms. The more useful question is which form makes you want to use the chronograph and wear the watch, rather than which name you expect a collector to approve.
