A quartz chronograph can deliver the pleasure of pushers, counters and a timing scale without the daily running-time habits of a mechanical movement. The useful distinction is between the power source, the stopwatch functions and the case you will actually wear. Three watches can share a familiar chronograph face while answering those questions differently.
The Seiko Speedtimer SSC813P1 is the compact solar option, Citizen’s Zenshin CA4610-85A uses titanium and Eco-Drive, and the Bulova Lunar Pilot 96K111 connects a larger steel case with a specific space-flight story. Each deserves consideration for a different reason.
Seiko Speedtimer: smaller diameter, familiar sporting layout
The SSC813P1 has a 39 mm steel case, a pale dial with dark counters and a fixed tachymeter scale. Its V192 solar movement has a stated six-month reserve from a full charge. At 13.3 mm thick and 45.5 mm lug to lug, it is compact in diameter but still needs a proper fitting to judge its height and footprint.
Seiko’s first Speedtimer arrived in 1969 as an automatic chronograph. The modern solar watch borrows the sporting visual language while changing the energy source and maintenance routine. The official UK boutique listed £640 and showed it out of stock at the check, so confirm the exact reference and availability rather than treating the displayed price as an immediately available offer.
Citizen Zenshin: titanium changes the proposition
The white-dial CA4610-85A uses Super Titanium with Duratect TiC for both case and bracelet. Citizen Europe specifies 42.5 mm diameter, 11.6 mm thickness and 101 g weight. It is wider than the Seiko, but the published mass gives a separate reason to consider it. Size and weight should not be treated as interchangeable measurements.
Citizen’s titanium-watch history reaches back to 1970, while its light-powered watch development produced a commercial model in 1976. This Zenshin combines those two strands with a B620 chronograph. The stated reserve is approximately nine months under the manufacturer’s specified usage conditions, and the stopwatch measures up to an hour in one-fifth-second increments. Its official UK price was £499 at the check.
Bulova Lunar Pilot: history with a different modern movement
The black-dial 96K111 uses a 43.5 mm steel case and a high-precision NP20 quartz chronograph operating at 262 kHz. It comes with a steel bracelet and an additional black leather NATO-style strap. Unlike the Seiko and Citizen, this model is not a light-charging watch. Battery maintenance belongs in the ownership plan.
Bulova’s lunar story concerns a chronograph worn on the Moon during Apollo 15 on 2 August 1971. The current Archive Series watch translates that history into a modern quartz product; its present movement did not accompany the mission. Reference 96K111 arrived in 2023, and the official UK listing showed £599 when checked.

Look beyond the number of subdials
Check what each counter actually shows. One can display ordinary running seconds, another elapsed minutes, and another a 24-hour indication tied to the main time. Similar-looking circles do not guarantee identical stopwatch functions. Read the operating guide and practise starting, stopping and resetting the exact model.
Solar convenience also depends on giving the watch sufficient light. A watch stored in a dark box for months may need charging before it is useful. Conversely, a conventional battery-powered watch is not inferior simply because it requires periodic replacement. Choose the energy system that fits how you store and rotate your watches.
Which one deserves a fitting?
Start with the Seiko if a smaller case is the priority, the Citizen if titanium and a broader integrated design appeal, or the Bulova if the lunar connection and larger steel case are central to the attraction. Check the pushers, bracelet sizing and readability of the counters at normal distance. The best quartz chronograph here is the one whose actual functions and proportions match the reason you wanted a stopwatch on your wrist.
