The black Speedmaster 38 has changed enough that an older review can describe the wrong watch. The 2026 reference removes the date, rounds the subdials and moves closer to the visual language many people associate with the Moonwatch. It remains an automatic chronograph with its own proportions and movement.

That is an attractive proposition if you want a smaller diameter without a daily winding ritual. It is less straightforward if “smaller” means thin. At 14.75mm high, this watch asks you to evaluate the side view as seriously as the familiar black dial.

The history behind the choice

Omega dates the Speedmaster family to 1957, but the 38mm collection has developed its own design identity within that larger story. The update announced on 25 August 2026 deliberately brought it closer to the Moonwatch’s appearance. Round subdials replaced oval ones, the dial lost some wording, and a thicker bezel restored a dot-over-ninety detail. Omega also introduced a five-link bracelet style. Movement choice now depends on the reference: six of the newly announced watches retained a date and calibre 3330, while this black version received the date-free 3332. That split is the key historical detail for a current buyer. “Speedmaster 38” no longer identifies one shared calendar arrangement across the new range.

The no-date face has a clear appeal

Removing the date gives the black dial a more continuous chronograph layout. The round counters also make the watch look more conventional as a sports chronograph than the previous oval treatment. If you liked the older model precisely because it was different, the update may feel less individual. If its unconventional details held you back, it deserves another look.

The matt black field and white markings keep the palette focused. That makes this reference a useful starting point for someone who wants the Speedmaster vocabulary without choosing a decorative dial or mixed-metal case. Its attraction is easy to explain: a familiar chronograph face, made more compact in diameter and paired with automatic winding.

A new dial is not a thin new case

Omega publishes a 44.96mm lug-to-lug measurement and a 14.75mm thickness. The compact length is relevant, but the side profile remains substantial. These figures describe different dimensions of the redesign and explain why this automatic 38mm chronograph should not be mistaken for a particularly flat watch.

The matt black dial and round counters draw it closer to familiar sports-chronograph vocabulary, while the absence of a date removes one interruption from the face. Those are meaningful reasons to revisit the collection. If the earlier model’s proportions, rather than its dial details, were the objection, compare the case profile directly. The new reference solves a different set of design questions from simply making the thinnest possible Speedmaster.

Calibre 3332 changes the ownership brief

Automatic winding makes the watch a different proposition from a manually wound chronograph. For regular wear, the attraction is that movement on the wrist contributes energy without a separate daily ritual. The stated fifty-two-hour reserve still makes this a watch to set again after a sufficiently long break.

The 3332 is an officially certified chronometer with a column-wheel chronograph and Co-Axial escapement. It is not described here as a Master Chronometer, because Omega’s exact product specification uses the former designation. Those names are easy to blur across the brand’s catalogue. The useful point for the buyer is that this particular automatic movement supports a time-and-chronograph display without a calendar.

The tachymeter supplies the family resemblance

The black aluminium tachymeter insert includes the dot-over-ninety detail associated with the Speedmaster’s visual vocabulary. That outside scale gives the watch a recognisable frame even as the new round counters and calendar-free dial revise the centre. Its function is to relate an elapsed interval over a known unit to a rate, rather than to provide the movable reference point of a diver’s bezel.

This matters when comparing it with a simpler watch: the chronograph controls, counters and external scale form a particular type of display. You do not need to calculate speed every day to enjoy it, but you should like the layout that function produces. The attraction is a compact automatic interpretation of that chronograph architecture, not just a three-hand watch with more interesting decoration.

Choose this version for its particular balance

The bracelet’s comfort-release adjustment is a useful part of the new package. Compare the complete bracelet watch rather than evaluating only a loose head or an older reference on a different strap. The updated dial, bracelet and no-date movement form one coherent choice.

Choose the 2026 black reference when you want an automatic Speedmaster, favour the simpler calendar-free face and are comfortable with the case height. Compare the date-equipped new variants if the calendar matters, and compare the wider Speedmaster family if the original Moonwatch experience is what you really want. This 38mm model should not need to impersonate another watch to justify itself. Its own combination of compact length, automatic operation and focused black dial is the reason to buy it.
