The Black Bay 58 name covers more than one watch. If you are considering the original black-dial steel-bracelet reference M79030N-0001, the important starting point is its MT5402 movement and straightforward three-hand layout. A specification attached to a newer member of the family should not automatically be assigned to this one.
That distinction matters when comparing shop listings, older articles and used examples. This guide uses Tudor’s original 79030N technical document to establish the watch’s identity. It does not assume a current UK retail price or promise that a particular retailer still has this reference available.
The original 79030N specification
| Case | 39 mm steel, polished and satin finishes |

The technical basis is Tudor’s 2018 Black Bay Fifty-Eight product document. Its historical Swiss prices are not current UK quotations.
A daily watch without a calendar
The absence of a date is a practical preference, not automatically an advantage. It keeps the display consistent from one side to the other, and there is no calendar to correct after a short month. If you frequently check the date while working, however, losing that function may be more noticeable than gaining a tidier dial.
The running reserve offers room for a weekend break when the watch starts fully wound. It should not be read as a guarantee that any amount of wrist time produces a full reserve. For an occasional wearer, the useful question is whether restarting and setting a mechanical watch feels like an acceptable routine.
COSC certification is part of the documented specification. We have not timed an example, and the condition of an individual used watch still requires assessment. The movement name is useful for identifying what you are buying; it does not tell you how a particular watch has been treated.
Judge the warm details at normal viewing distance
The original design combines a black dial with gold-coloured details, angular hands and a red triangle on the bezel. Those choices make it visibly different from an entirely monochrome sports watch. Look at it with your usual clothes and from the distance at which you normally read the time. A close-up can exaggerate details that may be subtle in daily use.
The bracelet’s rivet-style edges deserve the same test. If those details are part of the appeal, inspect them from the side. If they distract you in photographs, do not assume they will stop doing so after purchase. Neither preference needs a historical justification.
Try the whole bracelet, not just the case
A 39 mm diameter is an invitation to try the watch, not a guarantee of fit. The way the bracelet leaves the case and the position of the clasp can affect whether it stays centred. Ask for a realistic fitting rather than assessing a display watch with several excess links folded underneath your wrist.
Check what adjustment the exact clasp provides. Reviews of other Black Bay references may describe a different arrangement. Move your hand, bend your wrist and sit at a desk if possible. If the available settings leave it consistently too loose or too tight, that is a real ownership compromise, however appealing the case may be.
Buying an older example: condition before the headline price
Compare the reference on the paperwork with the watch and bracelet actually supplied. Ask for the service record, an account of replaced parts and a demonstration of the crown and bezel. Where water use matters, request evidence of a recent pressure test. A design’s original depth rating does not establish the present sealing condition of an older example.
Tudor states that watches sold from 2020 carry a five-year international guarantee, subject to its conditions, including sale through an official retailer and a correctly completed guarantee card. Check the original sale date and applicable cover rather than assuming a watch described as “unworn” has a fresh guarantee. Tudor guarantee terms.
For long-term ownership, ask about servicing as well as purchase price. Tudor describes a full service as a movement overhaul with accuracy and waterproofness testing; refinishing is an option. Make your preference about polishing clear before work begins. Tudor servicing procedures.
Verdict
The original 79030N suits someone who wants a compact-diameter mechanical sports watch, likes its warm details and can live without a date. Its strongest buying case comes from those preferences matching your routine. Confirm the exact reference, bracelet fit and condition before comparing prices.
