The Club Campus 708 can work well in an office where a watch is allowed a little personality. Its white dial and steel case are quiet foundations; the mixed numerals and orange small-seconds hand provide the playful part. The result is easier to pair with everyday work clothes than the Campus name might suggest.
The decision becomes clearer if you separate informality from impracticality. This is a 36mm hand-wound watch with a sapphire crystal and a swimming-suitable water-resistance rating. It can be a useful daily companion. What it cannot decide for you is whether you want that particular dial at the end of a formal shirt sleeve.
A watch designed around a new chapter
Nomos conceived Club Campus specifically for recent graduates, with a plain steel back available for a personal engraving. Its account of the collection’s purpose explains the name more usefully than treating it as a restriction on where the watch belongs. The idea was a mechanical watch that could commemorate an achievement and accompany the wearer into working life. The combination of Roman and Arabic numerals adds a deliberately individual character to that brief. Reference 708 carries it through a light dial and compact case, while the broader Campus family explores stronger colours and different sizes. The current movement specification has evolved too, so the continuity is in the collection’s purpose and design language rather than an assumption of unchanged internals.

Putting it into a working wardrobe
A white dial is a useful starting point for an office watch because it leaves the colour choices largely to your clothes. The orange seconds hand is a small accent, rather than a dial-wide commitment to a bright colour. The Arabic and Roman numerals carry more of the watch’s informality, so decide whether that detail feels like your taste or a novelty you may tire of.
The grey strap reinforces its relaxed appearance. A different 18mm strap may change how you perceive the watch, but do not assume any strap will transform it into a conventional dress design. Try the supplied configuration with the clothes you actually wear before planning to fix a mismatch through accessories.
Its dimensions make it a sensible candidate for someone who wants a compact everyday watch. The 44.3mm lug span is particularly useful when assessing fit. Check that the strap can turn around the wrist without the lugs projecting awkwardly, and choose a suitable strap length. A small dial does not cancel an ill-fitting strap.
A steel back has a purpose here
Reference 708 has a solid steel back. That supports the original engraving idea and keeps a personal inscription away from the public face of the watch. If you are buying it as a gift, decide on the exact watch before arranging engraving, and make sure the recipient’s preferred size and strap are settled first.
The movement remains part of the purchase even though it is hidden. The DUW 4001 provides manual winding, stop seconds and a quoted reserve of up to 53 hours. Nomos specifies its own swing system and regulation in six positions. These are features of the current calibre, not evidence of the timekeeping rate of a particular example.
Manual winding also fits the gift concept only if the owner welcomes it. Someone who wants a watch to remain ready through weeks of intermittent use may find battery quartz easier. Someone who enjoys a small daily ritual may find the Campus more engaging precisely because it asks for that interaction.
Practical care and the sharper alternative
Nomos’s care guidance recommends regular winding, annual water-resistance checks and servicing around every five years. The 10atm rating gives this reference a useful margin for swimming, but assess the strap separately before making frequent water use part of its routine. A dry, clean strap is also more pleasant against the wrist during a long day at work.
The luminous hands and markers offer an additional practical detail when lighting is poor. They do not change the dial’s character in daylight, and they should not be taken as a measured claim about how many hours an individual watch remains readable. Check the features that matter to you directly when handling one.
The Tangente 139 is the obvious comparison if you prefer straighter lines and less playful typography. It is thinner at 6.6mm, with a 35mm diameter but a longer 45mm lug span. Its 5atm rating also changes the water-use brief. Choose the Campus if the relaxed details feel personal and your work wardrobe has room for them. Choose the Tangente if its more restrained design is the thing you would rather see every day.
