The extra letter in GA-B2100 buys two changes you might appreciate more after the first week than in the shop: light-powered operation and time correction through your phone. The octagonal outline still does the visual work. The buying decision is whether those quieter conveniences are worth choosing over the ordinary GA-2100.
They can be, especially if you want a watch that remains ready with little regular attention. But Bluetooth does not make this a notification-filled smartwatch, and solar does not make it indifferent to where you store it. Understanding those boundaries is more useful than counting the functions on the product page.

The next step after the 2019 octagon
Casio introduced the GA-2100 in 2019 as a contemporary interpretation of the first G-Shock, the DW-5000C. Its octagonal shape and comparatively restrained analogue-digital dial took the shock-resistant idea in a different visual direction. The GA-B2100 followed in 2022, adding Bluetooth connection and solar charging while retaining the same published case length and width as the earlier model.
Casio’s launch account explains that a revised component arrangement and Carbon Core Guard construction made those additions possible in a compact package. It also links the first colour choices to earlier G-Shock 5600 models. The important historical point is functional development within a recognisable design, rather than a complete replacement of it. See the official GA-B2100 introduction.
What Bluetooth actually does here
The link works through the CASIO WATCHES app. It can correct the time and simplify settings, including world time, alarms and reminders. For someone who dislikes setting small digital displays with a sequence of buttons, moving some of that work onto a phone is a practical advantage.
The app functions also include phone finder and a time-and-place record. Those features should not be confused with a general-purpose screen for messages or continuous sports tracking. Look at the functions you would genuinely use rather than imagining that every Bluetooth watch offers the same capabilities.
Without the mobile link, Casio publishes accuracy of ±15 seconds per month. The watch still has ordinary timekeeping and manual controls, but automatic phone correction requires the connection and compatible software. This model does not list Multiband radio reception, so it should not be bought on the assumption that it receives a national time signal independently of a phone.
Solar power is useful if the dial sees light
The published reserve is approximately seven months of normal operation without further light after a full charge. Casio separately quotes 18 months in darkness with power saving active. Those are different operating conditions, not two competing versions of the same everyday battery-life promise.
The charging instructions make the ownership requirement clear: expose the face to light, and avoid keeping it covered by a sleeve all the time. In a UK winter, a watch worn mainly indoors beneath a cuff may need more deliberate light exposure than one used outside. There is no need to guess charging times from the weather alone; the manual provides lighting-based guidance.
Solar charging uses a rechargeable cell. It reduces routine disposable-battery changes but does not mean that there is no battery or that components last forever. The sensible habit is to keep it somewhere it can receive light when unworn and check the charge indication rather than waiting until functions shut down.
The dial is still an analogue-digital compromise
The hands provide the main time display, with a small digital area handling other information. The left-hand subdial indicates mode or charge level. That arrangement keeps the face less screen-dominated than a fully digital G-Shock, but it leaves less room for reading stopwatch or world-time information.
Casio includes a hand-shift feature to move the hands away from the digital display. It is useful, but anyone who plans to use the stopwatch constantly should try the display at normal viewing distance. The best-looking arrangement in a photograph is not necessarily the one you find easiest to read during an activity.
The 52 g published weight sits alongside a case 45.4 mm wide and 48.5 mm long. Low mass does not make the outline small. Check both the watch’s footprint and the strap’s bend around your wrist. The stated compatible band range is 145 to 215 mm, which helps screen for basic fit without pretending to predict comfort.
Compare the ordinary GA-2100 before deciding
The GA-2100-1A uses conventional batteries with a stated approximate three-year life. Its listed dimensions are 48.5 × 45.4 × 11.8 mm and its weight is 51 g. The GA-B2100 therefore adds its two central conveniences with only a small change in the published thickness and weight. The visual format remains closely related.
No current official GBP price was verified for the exact GA-B2100-1AER listing. Compare present UK offers for both references and decide what avoiding routine setting and battery replacement is worth to you. If you actively prefer a watch that never links to your phone, the ordinary model still has a coherent purpose.
Choose the GA-B2100 if you like the octagonal design, want solar operation and will use the app to keep settings simple. Choose the GA-2100 if you prefer a fully independent routine and do not mind periodic battery replacement. For either, try the digital display before buying. The worthwhile upgrade is the one that removes a task from your own week.
